Originally published in , this book was written with the intention of preparing candidates for the Higher Certificate Examinations. The text was created to bridge the gap between introductions to differential and integral calculus and advanced textbooks on the subject. One was by George Peacock on differential and integral calculus; the other was by Herschel on the calculus of finite differences. They were joined in this by Whewell, who in published a book, An Elementary Treatise on Mechanics, which used the new notation and which became a standard textbook on the subject.

It was originally issued as numbers and of the Library of Useful Knowledge (), and is usually bound up with De Morgan’s large Treatise on the Di erential and Integral Calculus (). Its style is uent and familiar; the treatment continuous and undogmatic. The main.

In these lectures we define a simple integral and study its properties; prove the Mean Value Theorem for Integrals and the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. This gives us the tools to justify term-by-term differentiation of power series and deduce the elementary properties of the trigonometric functions. Author(s): University of Oxford. G. S.
